How to Care for Sterling Silver And Gold Jewellery

A Guide from Emily Oliver Jewellery, Cornwall

Sterling silver and gold are timeless metals chosen for their warmth, beauty and longevity. At Emily Oliver Jewellery, each piece is handcrafted in Cornwall using sterling silver and carefully applied gold details, designed to be worn, treasured and passed on.

Like the sea-worn textures that inspire my work, precious metals develop character over time — but with the right care, they will stay radiant for years to come.

How to Care for Sterling Silver Jewellery

To keep your sterling silver pieces looking their best:

  • Store in a dry place away from humidity

  • Keep in a jewellery box or soft pouch

  • Avoid perfumes, lotions and harsh chemicals

  • Remove before swimming or showering

  • Wear regularly — silver loves to be worn

If you live near the coast (like we do here in Cornwall), salt air can accelerate tarnish slightly, so proper storage is especially important.

How to Care for Gold & Gold Detail

For solid gold or gold-accented jewellery:

  • Avoid contact with chemicals and cleaning products

  • Gently wipe with a soft cloth after wearing

  • Store separately to avoid scratching

  • Do not use abrasive polishing compounds

If your piece features silver with gold granulation or mixed metals, clean gently and avoid harsh dips.

How to Clean Silver and Gold Jewellery

  1. Use a soft polishing cloth designed for silver or gold

  2. Gently rub the surface to restore shine

  3. Avoid abrasive materials

  4. Do not use chemical dips on textured or mixed-metal designs

For detailed or granulated pieces, a soft toothbrush can help clean in between grooves and textures.
